If you wish to go the belt ranking route, there are nine (9) color ranks in all.  Sometimes, I may all allow for seven (7,) depending if the exceptions in parenthesis are in use.  This is left to the approval of the head instructor.  Though, there are always nine (9) levels of progression, no matter what is in place.  They are as follows:
White
Yellow
Second Yellow/yellow belt with a green stripe (maybe orange)
Green
Blue
Purple
Red (Maybe Brown)
Second red (Red belt with a black stripe.) Or, if brown belt is used, just red.
Black belt- Once you receive the rank of black belt, there are ten (10) levels of black belt that you can achieve.
Each belt rank has its own set of criterions in which the student had to accomplish.  Some of these things include (but not limited to) kicks, punches, hand attacks, forms, self- defense techniques, breaking, and sparring.  “Time in service” is also required per belt rank.  The instructor will inform the students of the next scheduled rank test and the student has the option of taking or not taking that particular test.  There may be a fee per rank test, whether the student passes or fails the test.  Though, the instructor will more than likely inform the student if he/she thinks their student is ready for testing.
