On top of having various styles of martial arts, there are also various forms or sub-styles of these martial arts as well. Tae Kwon Do is no exception to this. Our style of Tae Kwon Do is called Moo Duk Kwan. As with the term Tae Kwon Do, if you break this word down, you will find three Korean words. The word “moo” roughly translate to mean the “military art” or “military like.” The word “du,” “duk,” or “dao” means “the path” or “the way.” The word “kwan” means “school” or “institution.” Simply put, Moo Duk Kwan means “School of Martial (military) Way.” This style is popular in three general locations which include South China, the Central Philippine Islands, and South Korea. The Founder of Moo Duk Kwan is the Great Grandmaster Hwang Kee of Seoul, South Korea. He founded the Moo Duk Kwan on November 9, 1945.
